Emergency First Aid at Work

Emergency First Aid at Work

An Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a workplace training program that equips employees with the essential skills and knowledge to provide first aid assistance in emergency situations. This course is typically aimed at employees who are designated as first aiders in small workplaces or as a supplementary qualification for those who may already have a broader first aid certification.

Who Needs It?

  • The course is often required for workplaces where low to moderate risk is present, or where a full first aid at work qualification isn’t necessary.
  • It’s suitable for employees, supervisors, or managers who may need to assist in emergency situations but are not specifically trained for complex injuries or conditions.

Course content:

Basic Life Support (BLS):

    • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
    • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • Rescue breathing and chest compressions

Management of Unconscious Casualties:

    • How to assess and assist unconscious individuals.
    • Recovery position to maintain open airways.

Wound and Bleeding Control:

    • How to deal with minor and major bleeding (e.g., cuts, grazes, nosebleeds).
    • Application of dressings and bandages.

Dealing with Shock:

    • Identifying signs of shock.
    • Providing appropriate treatment to prevent further harm.

Burns and Scalds:

    • How to treat different types of burns (thermal, chemical, electrical).

Minor Injuries:

    • Treatment for sprains, strains, and fractures.
    • Basic treatment for headaches and other minor ailments.

Choking:

    • Techniques to clear an obstructed airway in adults and children.

Assessment of Casualties:

    • How to assess a casualty’s condition quickly and accurately.
    • Prioritizing care in a situation with multiple casualties.

The EFAW course lasts 1 day (6-8 hours), delivered onsite at the client’s location. The course is typically designed to be accessible, even for individuals with no prior first aid knowledge.

Certification:

  • Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate that is usually valid for 3 years.
  • It is often recommended to renew certification before it expires to keep skills current.
